Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)

The History of ATLS

Tulane Trauma Education (TTE) is an accredited provider for ATLS courses, a CME program developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT). ATLS provides a safe and reliable set of protocols for assessing and initially managing trauma patients. The ACS introduced the course in the U.S. in January 1980, Canada in 1981, and several other countries in Latin and South American in 1986. 

ATLS has been taught to over 1 million physicians around the world and has become the foundation of care for injured patients by teaching a common language and a common approach. The curriculum is reviewed and revised every 4 years to keep abreast of best practices in the management of trauma patients. The current 10th edition was created using an international, multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach that resulted in an ATLS education program that is contemporary and meaningful in the global community.

What to Expect in an ATLS Course

Tulane offers monthly Provider and Refresher courses and annual Instructor courses. All courses are taught using an educational format that is conducive to training physicians (and physician extenders) on the concepts, skills, and techniques required in initial patient resuscitation. The course encompasses multiple modalities, including core didactic lectures, interactive skills demonstrations, small group discussions, simulation techniques, and practical skills tests. 

The objectives of ATLS training are:

• Assess the patient's condition rapidly and accurately
• Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority
• Determine if the patient's needs exceed a facility's capabilities
• Arrange appropriately for the patient's definitive care
• Ensure that optimum care is provided

 Physician Extenders

Physician Extenders pay the same Provider cost. Competencies to pass this course include the ability to read and interrupt X-Rays and CT scans and the ability to conduct assessment stations as the team leads.

Please place the student's information (not yours) in the registration system, including name, address, phone numbers, and email address. This is vital to ensure clear and direct communication with the student. 

PLEASE NOTE: The ATLS course will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Terms and Conditions: 

All ATLS course registration fees include a non-refundable portion. Please review the following policy carefully before registering.

Cancellations:

• $100 non-refundable fee, regardless of the timing of the cancellation.

• A $300 non-refundable fee applies if a manual was shipped and a request to cancel registration is received more than 30 days prior to the course date.

• No refunds will be issued for cancellations made within 30 days of the scheduled ATLS course for which the participant holds an active registration.

 Rescheduling:

• Participants are allowed a one-time courtesy to transfer their original ATLS registration to a different ATLS course date, provided the request is submitted at least two weeks prior to the original course date of the participant’s registration. Please note that rescheduling to a different course date will incur a fee of $127.50, regardless of when the initial registration occurred.

The Sim Center does not accept personal checks for course registration fees. Students can pay cash, by credit card, or a business check.

The Sim Center reserves the right to cancel these courses due to unforeseen circumstances or low enrollment.

Cancellation due to enrollment would be announced at least 3 weeks prior to course dates. Students will be rescheduled to a later date or provided a full refund. Travel should not be booked before this time. Tulane is not responsible for any fees related to a canceled course.
